The Chiemgau Area was shaped about 15 000 years ago in the ice age with hills and mountains, lakes, forests and moors, meadows and wetlands. The biggest lake in the Chiemgau Area and in Bavaria is Lake Chiemsee with 82 square km in size. It is called the Bavarian Sea. The highest mountains in the area are nearly 2000 m above sea level.The name "Chiemgau" dates back to the 7th century to somebody called "Chiemo". End of 8th Century the name of Chimigaoe was first found in the offical records. Through the centuries the Chiemgau area grew bigger, today it covers the Traunstein and Rosenheim area.
